Geçen yıl kampçı yollamaya başladığımız Bodrum Güvercinlik’te özürlüler için yüzme ve dalış eğitiminin verildiği ve çeşitli sosyal etkinliklerin düzenlendiği bir tatil köyünde gerçekleştirilen, kampçılara da en az bir ay kalma koşulu getirilen “Alternative Camp” ta 5 ay boyunca 3’ü Türk , 22'si yabancı toplam 25 kampçı görev aldı.

Alternative camp is a place for handicapped people both psychical and mental and people with special needs of all kinds. Here all kind of sport programs, social, educational and training activities are held. Thus it is a very challenging and hard work. One can start any time and minimum stay is a month and longer stays are appreciated. Volunteers are expected to assist all manual and social work organized at the camp. You can also develop new activities depending on your talents. Interested volunteers will be trained as dive-buddies for handicapped people with the standard of HSA (Handicapped Scuba Association). Candidates should have a strong motivation to work with handicapped people and write a motivation letter including their experience (if any) and will to be a part of a hard working team. No previous experience is necessary but a good mood, good will is essential.

W: Serving and assisting the handicapped people in their daily life at the camp site, assisting the instructors during sport activities and courses, organizing and running social activities, manual work concerning reparations, gardening, cleaning, kitchen duties, shopping,leading groups for trekking and biking .

A: Either in triple rooms with bathroom or in tents. If you want, you can bring your own tent and sleeping bag. Q: Volunteers talented on computers, sports, indoor & outdoor activities, music, drama, fine arts, swimming and diving, handicrafts will be preferred. Teachers of above mentioned fields and skippers for the camp boat are needed especially.

F: Will be served at the centre.

LA: English, German & Italian. Turkish might be helpful but not necessary.

LO : Bodrum, is in the south west of Turkey by the Aegean Sea coast.

A motivation letter should be sent along with the application form.

DATES: 01.5 – 30.10.2003

PRE-CAMP DAYS: (This is an optional sight seeing program in Istanbul with an extra cost of USD 50.-) . PCD is organized 3 days before eachGENCTUR camp. But as the Alternative camp does not require a group gathering in Istanbul and people travels individually there is no organized PCDfor this camp. But if you date of arrival coincide with one of the scheduled PCD days of any other camp, you can join in the group. For details please contact GENCTUR.

Although there are a lot to see in the city we recommend you to join in the Pre Camp Days together with the other volunteers of

your own camp rather than trying to discover the city by your own.

NO OF VOLUNTEERS: 25 for the whole camp period.

PROVINCE : BODRUM

LOCATION: Alternative Camp is located by the Aegean Sea cost next to small Guvercinlik Village in the south east of Turkey. Bodrum where is a famous and touristy place with non-stop night life is 15 kms away. (But we prefer vols to be away of the night life and dedicate their time for the camp life.)

PARTNER: Alternative Camp is a non profit structure which aims to offer the other side of the life for the handicapped people those who

are socially kept out of the society due to their disabilities.

PROJECT / WORK: Helping to the camp staff in all possible ways in order to keep smooth running of the Alternative Camp. Experienced people may help for teaching swimming and diving. Apart from these all volunteers are requested to serve for any task any time like, cleaning, gardening, shopping, cooking, organizing social activities, etc.

AIM: To facilitate the participation of the handicapped people in the daily life and making them enjoy their stay.

LEADER: In all GENCTUR camps there is a bilingual,ex volunteer who is responsible for the smooth running of the camp. Our leaders are also volunteers. They are neither paid staff nor professionals. Most of them are university students who dedicate their free time for the development of the country and for helping to the local projects and to the foreign young people who participate in GENCTUR camps. They all have previous workcamp experience and participate in preparatory meetings.

In Alternative camp there is no leadership or leader but the camp directors will be programming the camp life and helping the volunteers in case of problems.

ACCOMMODATION : Basic in rooms for 2-3 people. As it is hot even in the nights it is possible to sleep outside on the grasses or in a tent. If you

want to do so please bring your own tent and sleeping bag.

FOOD: Will be prepared by the volunteers and served at the cafeteria of the center.

ORIENTATION MEETING: In order to get to know the other volunteers and to havebasic information on the camp,Türkiye and its culture, GENCTUR organizes an orientation meeting on the firstday of the camp.All volunteers have toattend to get information about the camp and to travelto the camp site altogether. The orientation of the Alternative Camp is at the site on arrival.

MEETING POINT : Either GENCTUR Office- Istiklal Cad. Zambak Sok.15/5 Taksim /ISTANBUL or directly Alternative Camp Site.

TRANSPORTATION: You can either buy a flight ticket to Bodrum Airport from you home country via Istanbul. In this case the campsite is 15 minutes by taxi. Or you can fly to Istanbul and take an inter-city coach to Bodrum to get off in front of the campsite. The coach ticket is about 20 USD. Please read the information on the Leader’s Letter. GENCTUR staff is ready to help you to organize your trip.

AFTER THE CAMP : Camp directors & staff will help you to organize your trip to the Bodrum Airport or to any other destination in Turkey.

CAMP LANGUAGE :English. Basic Turkish will be helpful as well. It will be nice if you try to learn few words & sentences before you arrive.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers should know that this camp is not for “fun seekers or night life lovers”. No special skill is required but enthusiasm and willingness to share all the work and tasks in the camp, solidarity, friendship, patient is a must.

NOTES: * If the volunteers travels out of the camp site for the free days, transport, accommodation and food expenses are volunteers' own responsibility.

. * The volunteers are expected to respect the rules of the camp and the traditions of the locals and should follow thedirections of the camp directors.

REGISTRATION FEE:The volunteers coming from a workcamp organization that hosts GENÇTUR volunteers in their camps are not charged any fee. Other volunteers should pay an inscription fee of USD 50.- which is charged to cover the expenses of running the program and the office works all year around. Please be aware that this fee is not related with the physical conditions of the camp like the quality of the bed or amount of the food. The fee is paid on arrival, in cash. As GENCTUR doesn't get any financial support from government, local administrations or any other institution, this inscription fee is a need.

ADDITIONAL INFO: The year before, both volunteers and the participants had really a great time altogether.

WHAT TO BRING: A musicalinstruments that you can play / Games / Pictures of your environment i.e. family, friends, home, school / posters, post cards, books introducing your country and culture / Your interest, fun and enthusiasm for the project and the group / Your personal goods / Medicines against diarrhea, sun stroke, pains, allergies / Ahat against the sun / Insurance documents /Enough money for your transport to and from the camp site, for your personal expenses.

WHAT NOT TO BRING : Drugs / Also please keep in mind that décolleté dresses, mini skirts, may not be allowed in thecamp site.

CURRENCY: 1 $ = 1.700.000 Turkish Liras and 1 Euro = 1.850.000 TL. while his info sheet has been prepared.All prices in the"Volunteers' Guide" and/or on the info-sheet are given as foreign currencies due to daily changes of the rate ofTL. in order to give an idea about the prices and to keep the fees and faresstable. Thus volunteers are supposed to pay theequal amount of TL. and don't need to bring or have foreign currencies for paying theregistrationfee and the cost of transport.

INSURANCE: There is no insurance on our camps this year. Volunteers should have their own travel insurance against illnesses and accidents.

LEISURE TIME POSSIBILITIES : The type of project will not allow so much free time. Volunteers should be aware that there will be no free time for the whole group at the same time but individually.
